Head of School Newsletter

Dear JHCS Families and Friends,

The 2019-2020 school year is off and running! This is a huge year for the Jackson Hole Community School – we are celebrating our 15th anniversary and looking towards the future with great excitement as we complete our search for a new Head of School. There is a lot to look forward to! In particular, please watch your email in the coming weeks for announcements about the 2019-2020 Annual Fund Drive Kick Off and our upcoming 15th Anniversary Celebration.

The summer of 2019 was a busy one in our building. Karen Hodges, our Energizer Bunny and Director of Operations, deserves huge kudos for spearheading a number of repair and refurbishing projects that have really brightened the School. Our common areas are sporting fresh, vibrant blue walls; the stairwell floors and railings are gleaming with new paint; and both conference rooms in the main building have moved into the 21st century with smart TVs, enabling students and staff engage in distance learning and video conferencing. (We are so grateful to an anonymous donor for providing that technology!) Karen even had the moveable wall in the library repaired – a much needed detail that will make the lives of students and staff easier. Thank you, Karen!

Along with changes to our physical space, we made some schedule and calendar changes as well, as we work to create the optimal educational environment for as many of our students as possible. We shifted our school start time from 8:00am to 8:30am, which enables our students to follow their adolescent circadian rhythms more closely while also accommodating the early release needs of many of our student-athletes. We shifted Fall Trips from October to September as well, seeking warmer weather, and students and staff are in the field as I write this. They are building community, pushing out of their comfort zones, and having a great time! Each of these adjustments strengthens the learning and growth of our students, both inside and outside the classroom.

As we begin the year, I also want to be sure that all of you know about an incredible opportunity that we have to raise funds through a new program called The FOR Project. Scott Hirschfield, co-founder and former Head of School, recently started The FOR Project, which enables all of us to direct money to The Community School whenever we eat out. When we make a purchase at one of the participating merchants across the country, JHCS automatically receives a percentage of the sale. This donation is provided by the merchant, not the customer.  Here is a link to JHCS on The FOR Project Website, which makes it easy to register and support The Community School. The FOR Project doesn’t currently have any restaurants in Jackson, but when you travel, please keep this in mind!
