Smith Maddrey

How long have you been working in education?

I started working as an Outward Bound instructor in the summer of 1996.

In what areas?

NC Outward Bound field instructor working in Costa Rica, Florida Everglades, and NC mountains from 1996-2000. I worked in the field for NOLS starting in 2000 before taking my first job as an English teacher in the fall of 2002.

How long at JHCS?

This is my eleventh year.

What do you do outside working at JHCS?

Dad of three spunky kids, Exum mountain guide, freelance magazine writer, backcountry powder enthusiast, desert slot canyon groveler.

What is your most rewarding part of the day at JHCS?

It's a three-way tie between listening to seniors deconstruct the meaning of a scene in a novel, facilitating Madlibs with ninth graders, and hurling the disc around on the field during lunch.

What drew you to the field of education?

All my close friends post-college were climbers, and they inspired me to start teaching courses at Outward Bound. It just never got old after that.
