• Fine and Performing Arts

  The Middle School Fine and Performing Arts Department is committed to fostering intellectual curiosity and creative expression through a challenging, skills-based curriculum.

  
  Our foundational purpose is to ensure every student is consistently challenged to express themselves artistically by moving beyond basic technique to become an active artistic thinker, skilled in creative problem-solving and non-verbal communication.
  
  

  We accomplish this through a demanding and supportive pedagogy that:

  • Fosters Inquiry and Discovery: We emphasize the delight of discovery and the creative process by guiding students through hands-on experiences, performance, and experimentation, encouraging them to take risks in their work.
  • Develops Skills and Interdisciplinary Thought: Students will practice and grow skills as artists, communicators, and thinkers, building confidence and discovering lifelong passions.
  • Cultivates Empathy and Connection: We use the arts as a direct tool to cultivate empathy and the ability to embrace multiple perspectives, enabling students to become thoughtful, innovative, and capable members of society.

• Humanities

  The Middle School Humanities Department (integrating Social Studies and English) is committed to fostering intellectual curiosity and rigorous analytical thought by empowering students to confront and make meaning from challenging questions about the human experience.
  
  

  Our foundational purpose is to move students beyond simple recall to become active critical thinkers and writers, skilled in meaningful mastery and complex problem solving. This emphasis on demanding inquiry ensures every student is consistently challenged.
  
  

  We accomplish this through a demanding and supportive pedagogy that:

  • Fosters Inquiry and Discovery: Our curriculum is structured around intentional grade-level Essential Questions to emphasize the delight of discovery and the freedom to ask questions about the human experience:
    • 6th Grade: Who am I in relation to myself?
    • 7th Grade: Who am I in relation to my community?
    • 8th Grade: Who am I in relation to my world?
  • Develops Skills and Interdisciplinary Thought: Our program holds students to rigorous standards, developing high-level skills—including thoughtful argumentation, textual analysis, and historical interpretation—that require them to make connections between their learning and their lives.
  • Cultivates Empathy and Connection: We use our curriculum as a direct tool to cultivate empathy and the ability to embrace multiple perspectives, preparing students to be thoughtful, articulate citizens capable of engaging with profound challenges and different points of view.

• Mathematics

  The Middle School Math Department is dedicated to fostering mathematical curiosity, creative problem-solving, and rigorous analytical thought through a highly differentiated, ability-based curriculum that provides the possibility for motivated students to take Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Geometry by the completion of 8th grade.
  
  

  Our core purpose is to ensure that every student is consistently challenged by being placed in the most rigorous and demanding course that aligns with their demonstrated abilities and strengths. This specialized approach, supported by faculty who serve as mentors, enables students to take ownership of their learning and build profound confidence in their quantitative reasoning skills.
  
  

  We transform students from passive learners into active problem-solvers by integrating:

  • Conceptual Understanding and Inquiry: Moving beyond rote procedures to emphasize the delight of discovery and the deep conceptual mastery required to approach mathematics with an appreciation for its logical beauty and structure.

  The Middle School Science Department is committed to fostering intellectual curiosity and the spirit of scientific discovery within a rigorous, vertically integrated, and challenging curriculum encompassing Earth Science (6th Grade), Life Science (7th Grade), and Physics and Chemistry (8th Grade).
  
  

  Our central purpose is to move students beyond rote memorization to become active scientific thinkers, skilled in evidence-based reasoning, data analysis, and complex problem-solving. • World Language

  The Middle School World Language Department is committed to fostering human connection, cultural awareness, and analytical thought through a challenging and appropriate sequence of Spanish courses.
  
  

  Our foundational purpose is to ensure that every student who begins their World Language study at JHCS  is challenged and supported in achieving an appropriate level of fluency, with the goal that every student achieves, at a minimum, mastery of a high school Spanish I course by the time they graduate 8th grade. Simultaneously, we use language as a direct tool to cultivate empathy with the ability to embrace multiple perspectives and gain an understanding of historical and global issues.
  
  

  We accomplish this through a demanding and supportive pedagogy:

  • Supported Immersion & Interpersonal Growth: This curriculum is delivered by faculty who serve as dedicated mentors, creating a supportive environment that encourages the spontaneity and confidence required for linguistic immersion and fostering the valuable lifelong cultural connections that language makes possible.
  • Rigor and Comparative Analysis:  Moving beyond basic vocabulary and grammar acquisition, our program immerses students in a variety of real-world cultural contexts, emphasizing communication tasks that require interpretation of language and media, and fostering comparative analysis between cultures. This process directly builds the cultural competence necessary to navigate a world of divergent experiences.
  • Skills-Based Progression: The curriculum is vertically integrated, ensuring students build a foundational mastery of the three modes of communication that align with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) national standards: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational.
